An Emotional Storm

Some sit out the storm. Others use it to take higher flight.

I love a good storm— the undeniable winds that blow right through me, and the surge of an ocean that carves away my edges and calls me deeper, higher, louder.

Of course, there are times when we are meant to hunker down—to be the stillness in the center of its fury—watching, waiting, listening for its howl to return to calm. But this shadow dance that we all have been experiencing lately is one that I see as a storm we are meant to embrace and even to embody— to match with our own intensity, our own howl and surge of emotional waves.

Let it cut you deeper. Let it wear away your edges and take you. We are being carried not out, but in. And though it churns and sometimes burns, we must let it. For this is how pearls are made and uncovered.

In the embrace of an irritant—a seemingly ‘foreign’ object or being—the oyster secretes her magic, layering beauty and strength within herself. And then, in one blessed and even wretched storm, she is cracked open, turned over, revealed in her own death as an eternal and everlasting force. Amen!

So let us remember the power that the storms of life call out in us. Let us soar higher and deeper into their surges. Let us greet them with our howl, and hollow out the sands we once held to. Let us embrace the irritants with our beauty and our strength, and become the pearl everlasting.
