Poem: "Broken Yoke Blues"

(from my days as a restaurateur)

Dimes and times
Clocked
Checks written
Betrothed to another
My heart smitten
Then bitten
By the bitter
Taste of waste
Given
Unto
Over
Out

Be still!
I’d shout
This honey
My money
Flowed red
Calendars marked
With dread
Days pushing
Paul petering
Pickpocketing
Fray the thread
Oh my head!

Squeeze another lemon
Please another man
Hand over hand
Last drop
Last call
Thank you
Come again
Please!
Gimme
I’ll shimmy
Ball to chain
Dance and wane

For tips
That drip
Cents
With scent
Un-sensed
Of my pain
Staking
My heart
Taking
My claim
Smiling
All the same

Another day done!
Wipe it clean
Pray for the Green
Z-out
Re-run
Cost overdone
But we’re in the black!
Fades the sun
Payroll
Taxes
Broken glasses
Charred to ashes

And oh the ache!
When I would wake
To competitors
And editors
Of reviews skewed
Reputation screwed
Over easy eggs
And half-baked platitudes
Bite that tongue
Spin it
Win it
Monkey flung

But oh my back!
Can’t flap another Jack
Weighted Scales
Slumped Sales
Dump the last
Brown-water pail
This mop is wrung
My tears have sung!
Close the door
Leave it on the floor
That broken yoke
Is yours no more
